Kalk Bay has a very different ambience to anywhere else in Cape Town, with a laid-back, eclectic, arty lifestyle that is incredibly appealing, making you feel instantly relaxed and at ease. Time seems to slow down in this vibrant district, where your senses are overwhelmed by the bright colours around you and the noise of the sea, the fishermen and the happy chatter of locals and visitors alike.

This is the perfect place for a road trip, with much to offer including numerous boutique stores and restaurants. Drive over Boyes Drive enjoying magnificent vistas of False Bay beach and look out for whales surfacing in the waves. When you arrive in Kalk Bay make sure you have put aside enough time to explore everything on offer.

Stroll down the street and take in the noise, smells and colours around you. Stop at some of the antique shops and rustle up hidden treasures from ancient sewing machines and old-fashioned cameras to delicate porcelain china and tiny pottery animal figurines. From the enticing antique stores wander to the superb second-hand book shops where the smell of old books welcomes you in and the promise of knowledge and secrets lies on every shelf – from a history of South Africa to sultry romance novels.

Elegant boutiques like Mythology and India Jane offer gorgeous, one-of-a-kind clothes with whimsical dresses and beautifully constructed blouses lined up in irresistible rows. Embrace your free hippie, tree-hugging self at Gypsy where long flowing skirts, dresses, shiny bangles, henna and sparkles are the order of the day. Next door, gaze in wonder at the remarkable, unique jewellery designs or skip over the road to look at more antiques and bric-a-brac items.

If you’re feeling peckish then pop into Olympia Café and indulge in the tastiest pastries in town. The café is always buzzing with a simple, rustic charm and glass windows looking out to the sea. The chocolate brownies and croissants are honestly to die for, as is the special artisan bread. Tribeca offers scrumptious home-made bread and tasty breakfasts while you can sit on the Brass Bell’s deck and listen to the waves crashing up against the windows while tucking into mouth-watering pizzas. For incredible ice-cream head to the Ice Café and try some of their more exotic flavours including the divine cinnamon concoction.

Kalky’s is world-renowned and serves amazing fish and chips, Cape Town style, at the bustling Kalk Bay Harbour. Across the road, Lucky Fish gives Kalky’s a run for its money with generous portions of golden battered hake with chips. You can walk to the lighthouse and admire all the brightly coloured boats bobbing in the harbour and look out for the resident seal which sits on the steps next to where the fisherman sell their fresh fish, waiting for offcuts.

Kalk Bay is a wonderful little place, which is the perfect destination for a road trip and a day of fun in the sun with family and friends. Vineyard Car Hire is a superior Cape Town car hire company, easily accessible in Kenilworth. The car rental service offers great value for money with affordable, top-quality vehicles and excellent service.

Car hire in Cape Town

My family and I were planning a holiday in South Africa. We were flying from abroad so we needed a car for the three months that we would be staying there. I came across many car rental businesses, but what caught my attention was that Drive Africa offered 4x4 rentals as well as long term car hire in Cape Town which is exactly what I was looking for.

The highlight about the whole package is that you get unlimited mileage, as my family and I will be travelling a lot in South Africa as it is our first time visiting the country so there is lots on our to do list. For any tourists this really is the best most convenient option.

I was very impressed with Drive Africa’s service, they were efficient and our long term car hire in Cape Town is now booked and awaiting our arrival. For anyone looking for car rental companies I highly recommend this company as there prices are very good as well as their service is outstanding.

Be a Responsible Student Driver

Too often, we get our drivers licenses and then start racing around the roads, enjoying the thrills of new found independence, but forgetting the responsibilities which come with it. Many young drivers unfortunately become part of the other 67% of South African drivers who choose to be uninsured, posing a hazard to themselves and to the other drivers and passengers on the road. Numerous youthful drivers are students, living off a tiny budget and driving around second-hand vehicles which are not always in the best shape.

Students generally don’t have insurance because they think it is too expensive and that they won’t qualify and will be discriminated against because of where they live, their low income, occupation and their vehicle’s propensity for theft or hijacking. Prime Meridian is an insurance company with a difference, which is accessible to all South Africans, offering affordable cover irrespective of your personal profile.

The reliable insurance company offers two kinds of car insurance, the Prime Total Loss Protection Plan and Prime Motor Assist. With over 500,000 accidents happening on our roads each year, 60% of which result in vehicles being totally written off, no one can afford to be without insurance. The Prime Total Loss Protection Plan will cover you in the event that your car is written off, or if it is stolen, hijacked, or destroyed by fire or a natural disaster.

If you are above nineteen years of age and have been in possession of your licence for twelve months or more, then you qualify to be insured and should start making responsible decisions which will stand you in good stead for the rest of your life. Choose the level of cover which you can afford and then identify your car’s retail price and find the corresponding monthly premium. For example, if you are under 25 and want 75% cover and your vehicle’s retail price is R50,000, then you can pay a monthly premium of as little as R308,25. You can also generate an instant online price or talk to Prime Meridian’s well-informed, helpful staff for advice on the best insurance plan for you.

Did you know that 9% of car accidents happen because the vehicle has been badly maintained? Don’t make this mistake and become responsible for an unnecessary accident; instead invest in Prime Motor Assist, which provides dent, scratch and roadside assistance for all the eventualities which driving brings, including flat tyres, running out of fuel, cracked windscreens and minor dents. The roadside assistance includes a towing service in the event of a breakdown, while autobody maintenance includes dent and scuff repair and well as fixing windscreen cracks and chips.

Prime Motor Assist is a cheap insurance plan, which is vital to keep your car in tip top condition, ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you. The wide range of premium benefits offered by this policy is not easily matched, with membership incorporating three distinct benefit packages, including 24/7 roadside assistance, vehicle body maintenance and mechanical and electrical failure warranty if you invest in the PLUS+ plans. Choose from Basic, Basic Plus, Executive and Executive Plus plans to find the policy which best suits you and your budget. Uniquely there are no excess claims fees and no pre-vehicle inspection is required.

Make the smart insurance decision and choose to be a responsible driver. Prime Meridian’s car insurance plans are so cheap that you will save money, which you can put in the bank to accumulate interest or spend on education and other investments in your future.
